Can a Name Tag Influence an Interview?

Name Tag Pros • Dec 14, 2020

Recently, we’ve watched the interviewing processes change. Many are now conducted virtually out of an abundance of caution. However, at the heart of the interview, it’s still much the same. Candidates will provide resumes, proof of credentials, and those who stand out from the rest will perhaps participate in a phone interview. Those who excel, are then asked for a face-to-face interview. Even though this is now being done using an online platform, it’s still an important part of the process and needs to be handled in a way that both parties are comfortable with.

There is a lot of information available for interviewees, but not nearly as much for the interviewer. So, here are a few tips for the businessperson, the recruiter, executive, or hiring manager.

Be Personable

It’s easy for the interviewee to feel like they are being put on the spot and each of their words, actions, and answers are going to be crucially assessed. But the interviewer is on the spot too. If you come across as too strict, uncaring, or unapproachable, the interviewee also has a choice. They don’t have to work for you. This is one area where a name tag can have a huge influence.

Even if the interview is being conducted through Skype or Zoom, name tags provide a personable touch. Even though they are small, they send the huge message that you are approachable and ready to communicate. A name tag can also help the interviewee. You’ve been on that side of the interviewing process, it can be nerve-wracking. Save them the embarrassment of not knowing your name or position and help them remember you long after the interview in a positive light by wearing a professional name badge.

Prepare Your Questions Ahead of Time

An interviewee needs to be as prepared for an interview as possible. But the interviewer should also be prepared. You should know what you are looking for in the position and although there is a lot of flexibility needed, most of your questions should be prepared beforehand. Within the questions and the candidate’s answers, leave room for discussion. They need to get to know you as much as you need to know them, even though it’s for very different reasons. Be prepared with some open-ended questions without clear answers so you can get a glimpse of their thought processes and personality.

Avoid Uncomfortable and Illegal Topics

It’s totally fair game to ask questions that are straightforward and even a little difficult to answer. You can ask the candidate why they are looking to leave their current employer. Maybe ask a few questions about how they work best. Do they prefer consistent work? Or would they prefer fast-paced quick tasks back-to-back? Ask about their work routines and work ethics. However, there are a lot of questions that are illegal to ask. Avoid questions that can show bias such as:

  • Are you a U.S. citizen?
  • Do you have any disabilities?
  • Do you want to have a family? When do you want to start a family?
  • Have you ever filed a claim for workman’s comp?
  • What types of activities do you participate in when you are not at work?

There are plenty of valid (and legal) questions you can ask that can help you evaluate the candidate’s core competencies. Examples of great questions include:

  • What work-related goal has been difficult for you to achieve?
  • Can you describe a situation where you had to take an innovative course of action?
  • At what level do you interact with consumers in your present position?
  • Describe a time when you’ve had to take on new roles or tasks. How did you adjust?

The interviewing process can make everyone nervous. But coming with a plan can help you feel more comfortable. When you are at ease, the candidate will more likely be at ease. Take it easy on them – you once sat where they are sitting today!
